tube going to the flyball govenor block was slightly pinched because of hole placement in base, will disconnect tie rod to beam from crankshaft to make sure no tightness in piston is there.
Whistle blows, though . . .
Yes the build was very easy, instructions fantastic, then no operating instructions, but I have steam engines so I worked it out.
A guy on YouTube said its best to run it in on compressed air for 20 minutes to run it in and free up any tight spots. I dont have compressed air so after a few goes at running it, it only ran for a few seconds, I removed the govenor belt, it ran slow with steam valve fully open and gradually got faster so I regulated it with the steam valve, after 10 minutes or so I put the belt back on and it ran. I adjusted the regulator on the govenor by trial and error, now I have it running at a fairly steady speed, with the small boiler it would soon run out of steam at a fast speed, but I have it regulated to keep a good head of steam in store. I put a drop of steam oil in the cylinder and on the slide valve, both ends, I oil all moving parts with steam oil, it has good sticking properties.
Some running instructions would be nice, I worked it out being a steamer, but some newbys may struggle.
I have my doubts about the plastic steam pipes, may replace them with copper or brass if/when they become a problem.
I have the exhaust running to a condensor (a tin can with a hole in the top) via a plastic tube into the side of the can, the steam comes out of the top hole, the oily water collects in the can. Less bother than the tray.
Overall it is a nice Beam Engine, using the original Beam Engine Tech' and it makes a good addition to my collection, it looks well on the shelf as well.
I have assembled the engine but cannot get the engine running. the steam seems to be escaping and there is not enough pressure to move the piston. The piston is continually filled with water condensate.
make it steam tight. I still think it was great value for the cost.
water on the boiler (and remember to special oil to the cylinder and piston(you could mentioned it the instruktions)warm up and the engine runs perfecktly with a sound of an old lokomotive as those vi have here in Denmark in the past.
Thumps up.
So now to fire it up, and this is when the issues began. I used distilled water and lit the fire. When the steam began to build
a number of leaks were noticed around the fittings on the top of the boiler. This prevented the engine from running for more then a few seconds.
The boiler just could not keep enough steam going. Ok, so take the boiler apart and check it out.
There was no way I could stop these leaks completely by tighting the nuts inside the boiler, so I just soldered the fittings in place.
Problem solved, the boiler held steam, well still a bit leaking from the whistle, I can live with that.
Now the little engine runs fine, you do have to get the cylinder lined up well to prevent binding.
So this is a great little model and with a little work it now will run fine for the duration of the burn, all most 10 minutes.
However given the price of this model the manufacture should take care of these issues so it works out of the box.
One more point for the manufacture, the the cylinder and block are glued together and came apart after less then an hour of run time.
So more solder to keep these together, I also soldered the little steam fitting pipes to the block too. Glue will never hold with the heat.
With all these repairs it has turned out to be a great model and I am happy with it.
So if your handy with tools and can solder you can end up with a great working model.
Today decided to run the engine first time on steam. Preheated distilled water before placing it in the boiler. Filled fuel container to the max. Placed water inside the boiler making sure that there is plenty room for the steam, ignited burner and placed it under the boiler waited until the water got hot to make steam. Noticed leakage of pressure/steam around and trough the whistle no matter of adjustment I was unable to stop the leak. Opened the valve on the boiler to allow the steam flow to the engine. Engine would not run I believe that was due to the steam pressure loss and not being able to produce steam quick enough in order to maintain proper minim pressure to ran the engine. Took the whistle apart and plugged the hole disabling any flow of steam trough it, no difference it leaked on the sides of the body. Burned the entire amount of the fuel in the burner , tried to adjust steam flow with the valve and nothing engine did not turn at all . I believe that was due to insufficient pressure and to the leaks. While cleaning the engine a small exhaust pipe on the engine piston body came off it. Looks like this pipe was just pressed in the hole on the body and now it would not stay in it. I join it with solder in place. Well in previous review I rated this engine 4 stars that was when I ran it on a compressed air it ran very good. Compressor can produce steady flow of minimum compressed air pressure required to ran the engine even with a small leaks. Steam can not be replaced as quickly to maintain that same constant pressure flow in the engine. After running it I cleaned it , while cleaning it a small exhaust pipe on the engine piston body came off it. Looks like this pipe was just pressed in the hole on the body and now it would not stay in it. I join it with solder in place. I test run the engine on compressed air and it runs good on air only.
Rating this engine for operation under the steam power I will give 0 stars. I am disappointed that it does not run as it should on steam , that is why it is called STEAM ENGINE.. If you plan running it on steam only, well you are on your own.
